Assessing the visibility of road markings

Ecodyn measures the daytime and night-time visibility of road markings by simulating the night vision of a driver using dipped headlights.  Measurements are taken in daytime conditions, in a single sweep by vehicles travelling at normal traffic speeds.

For characterising horizontal signage, the following parameters are analysed:

• Back-reflection or back-reflected luminance coefficient.

• Daytime road marking/pavement contrast ratio.

• Night-time road marking/pavement contrast ratio.

The measuring device is mounted on a vehicle and comprises the following parts:

• External module (light source).

• Data acquisition unit inside the vehicle.

• Internal calibration pattern.

• Photoelectric cell to monitor and correct back-reflection depending on luminous flux.

Operation

This equipment can measure the optical parameters of road markings every 0.4 m at speeds of up to 110 km per hour. The angle of illumination, defined as the angle between the axis of the beam emitted by the light source and the road surface, is 1.24º and the angle of observation, i.e. the angle between the direction of observation and the road surface, is 2.29º. The front-mounted wide-screen camera takes an inventory of signs with x, y and z co-ordinates
